When You Taught Me How To Dance - Katie Melua (Miss Potter)

When you taught me how to dance
Years ago, with misty eyes,
Every step and silent glance,
Every move, a sweet surprise.
Someone must have taught you well,
To beguile and to entrance,
For that night you cast your spell,
And you taught me how to dance.

Like reflections in a lake
I recall what went before.
As I give, I’ll learn to take,
And will be alone no more
Other lights may light my way
I may even find romance;
But I won’t forget that night
When you taught me how to dance

Cold winds blow, but up on those hills you’ll find me
And I know you’re walking right behind me,

When you taught me how to dance
Years ago, with misty eyes,
Every step and silent glance,
Every move, a sweet surprise.
Someone must have taught you well,
To beguile and to entrance,
For that night you cast your spell,
And you taught me how to dance.
And you taught me how to dance.

Wish You Were Here - Kate Voegele (One Tree Hill)

Gone away are the golden days
Just a page in my diary
So here I am a utopian citizen
I'm still convinced
There's no such thing as idealism

Memories they're following me like a shadow now
And I'm dreamin'
Cause I've already suffered the fever of disbelief

I've seen your act
And I know all the facts
I'm still in love with who I wish you were

It ain't hard to see
Who you are underneath
I'm still in love with who I wish you were
And I wish you were here

I was true as the sky is blue
I couldn't soon say the same for you
So now I find denial in my eyes
I'm mesmerized by the picture that's in my mind

Tell me when I'll finally see your shallow heart
For what it is
'Cause I don't want to keep on believin' in illusions

No no no

Cause I've seen your act
And I know all the facts
I'm still in love with who I wish you were

It ain't hard to see
Who you are underneath
I'm still in love with who I wish you were
I wish you were here

Sometimes I can't explain
And I'm so sorry that I can't
I'll try to concentrate
On your true identity

Cause I've seen your act
And I know all the facts
I'm still in love with who I wish you were

It ain't hard to see
Who you are underneath
I'm still in love with who I wish you were

I've seen your act
And I know all the facts
I'm still in love with who I wish you were

It ain't hard to see
Who you are underneath
I'm still in love with who I wish you were

I wish you were here... Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
I wish you were here... Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
I wish you were here...
I wish you were here...
I wish you were here...

Adele - Hometown Glory

English soul singer Adele is one of the UK's biggest new names of 2008

This song 'Hometown Glory' was her very first single

It is also included in her debut album "19" released this year

Coincidentally it has been ranked number 19 in the UK Top 40 Singles last week when I first heard it:)

I've been walking in the same way as I did
Missing all the cracks in the pavement
And tutting my heel and strutting my feet
"Is there anything I can do for you dear? Is there anyone I could call?"
"No and thank you, please Madam. I ain't lost, just wandering"

Round my hometown
Memories are fresh
Round my hometown
Ooh the people I've met

Are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of this world
Are the wonders of my world

I like it in the city when the air is so thick and opaque
I love to see everybody in short skirts, shorts and shades
I like it in the city when two worlds collide
You get the people and the government
Everybody taking different sides

Shows that we ain't gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united
Shows that we ain't gonna take it
Shows that we ain't gonna stand shit
Shows that we are united

Round my hometown
Memories are fresh
Round my hometown
Ooh the people I've met

(Doo/Oh/Yeah adlibs)

Are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of my world
Are the wonders of this world
Are the wonders of my world

Of my world - yeah
Of my world
Of my world - yeah

This year's Edinburgh International Festival is coming back from 8 August 2008

I have to see it for the first time and may be the last time

And I was just fascinated by this photo from Deca Dance 2008

Which reminds me the dance in the movie

So much like its closing pose

It's also a movie I like^_^

Portugal

Because of a conference, I had a chance to go to Portugal for nearly a week

When I was sitting in my friend's car on the way to the airport

I was not excited but nervous for the unpredictable coming trip all by my own:(

Far beyond my expectation it turned out to be an enjoyable journey^_^

I took BA return flights, which were even cheaper than KLM

But both the outbound and inbound flights from London Heathrow were delayed by over an hour

I only know the reason for the delay of my leaving flight from London to Lisbon

It was because we were so lucky that George Bush happened to arrive in the airport at the same time for his holiday in UK

After two and half hours' flight we were finally landing on the earth of PortugalOpen-mouthed

Even inside the airport I could feel the heat from outside

After more than half an hour's waiting did I manage to walk out of the airport with all my luggage

I was lucky
compared with people complaining about the chaotic luggage control of the airport online
compared with my friends with experiences of lost or delayed luggage with BA before
and compared with my friend who was also attending the conference received his luggage after two days of arrival

It was overcasting for rain when I arrived, the only cloudy day during my stay there

There was a long queue for a taxi outside the airport

My destination was Estoril, a bit too far for a taxi

And the best way to get to Estoril from Lisbon was said to be on the picturesque train ride along the coast

So, 3 euros for an AeroBus ticket from Airport to the terminal Cais do Sodré in the city center
and 1.65 euros for a train ticket from there to Estoril (same price to the terminal Cascais) which was really cheap

It was already late and dark when I arrived at Estoril

I met my friend and his friends there and went for dinner in a Chinese restaurant called "Guang Hua" together

The restaurant was nicely decorated with stylish red colors

It was already ten o'clock but customers were still continuously coming in, a big difference from Glasgow

A satisfactory meal only cost 8 euros per person:)

When I arrived at the hotel I booked, it was already after 11pm

But I was told that the hotel was overbooked and I had been transferred to another hotel:0

It was late, and the hotel looked new and nice although it's only 3 star (I did my homeworkOpen-mouthed)

I asked the receptionist to double check if there was any available room on that night or for the following days

But only got a straight 'no':(

He might think I was so ungrateful

For he emphatically mentioned the hotel I'd been transferred to was 4 star

I was sent to the second hotel by a free taxi paid by the first hotel

It is much bigger than the first one, looked GRANDIOSE

But the only thing I cared about was to crawl to my bed ASAPSleepy

The receptionists didn't seem to know about my transfer

But after a short discussion they decided to take me in

I am so grateful even now

For the hotel was so new, clean and nice which made me feel just as much comfortable and relaxed as at home

Only until when I showed off my satisfying hotel to my friend, believing my 4 star was much better than his

Even had a balcony with a lovely view

He found that it is a 5 STARSurprisedOpen-mouthed

So much like the ceiling of the lobby

Could not hide my pleased smile:)

The grand exterior appearance of the hotel

Facing the Atlantic Ocean

Post office in Estoril where I sent out my postcards, with a red sign featuring a galloping white horse

To be continued ...

Day 1

MORNING: Conference registration and opening ceremony, held in Estoril Conference Center (ECC)

AFTERNOON: Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of mainland Europe

First, we were short of time

Secondly, we didn't know there's a bus no. 403 going to Cabo da Roca directly from Cascais

Thirdly, the receptionist in my hotel told us that it only took around 10 minutes by taxi to get there

We took a taxi which got us there after at least twenty minutes and cost around 13 euros

We asked the driver to wait for us and he seemed happy to stay

But as soon as we learnt that there's a bus available hourly and taxi's waiting costs money

We dismissed him right away and another 4 euros gone already

Why could we find out the existence of bus so quickly?

Because the first thing my friend did right after he got out of that taxi was to

Go to the tourism office to get a certificate as a proof of his having been there^_^

The place "where the land ends and the sea begins"

Protuguese: "Onde a terra acaba e o mar começa"

There are two kinds of certificate provided

5 euros and 10 euros

We chose the cheaper oneOpen-mouthed

Some interesting special succulent plants

All over the ground

Ticket price for the bus back to Cascais was 2.6 euros per person

Journey time approx. 40 minutes

EVENING: Cascais

The bus 403 just stops behind this shopping mall, which opens until 11pm

Lovely trees beacause of that lovely little greenish house

Typical Portuguese mosaic street and ceramic tile wall

Aren't those trees like huge pineapples?Wink

A place used to be a fish market

Had our dinner beneath the giant umbrella on the left hand side of the outside standing waiter in black

Starters, a mix of seafood served with rice, two bottles of water, and live Euro football match show, 2 persons, 26 euros

The Samsung LCD TVs seemed popular in hotels and restaurants in Portugal

Cause I had a paper to present first in the first session at the conference the next morning

We headed back early when it's just started getting dark at about 9pm

To be continued ... :)

Portuguese visa application in Manchester

There are only two Portuguese Embassies in UK

One is in London, the other is in Manchester

Applicants should go to the Embassy and submit their application documents IN PERSON

No application by post is accepted

People living in Scotland should go to the Embassy in Manchester

To get my Portuguese visa for attending the OMAE conference in Estoril

I had to go to Manchester

Before going to the Embassy in Manchester you need to make an appoinment by email or fax

If you have to apply to the Embassy in London then you need to make an appointment by phone in advance which costs about £1 per minute

The appointment management of the Embassy in Manchester was chaotic

First I was told there was no appointment available before my planned travel date

After I explained how important this conference was to me

I was answered right away on the same day but a Friday evening that my appointment would be on the next Monday morning

I was really grateful for their humanity and flexibility but how could I prepare all the required documents all of a sudden over two non-working days:(

I explained and asked for another appointment date and generously they offered me one

But confusingly a few days later an email came and offered me another appointment date again

Then I was totally lost

But finally we agreed on a morning appointment date which means I needed to get up fairly early to catch up a train from Glasgow to Manchester which took nearly 4 hours

It was a little difficult to find the Embassy according to the google map until you've found it

Actually it's right on the Portland street and facing the Piccadilly Garden

The Embassy is located in the building behind the statues across the road

Here is the building

On the second floor, behind the second window from right was seated the consulate officer while the applicant was behind the third window

I don't know what the place is in the picture below even now, but I had spent nearly the whole afternoon there before my leaving

Just sitting there, soaking myself in the sun

Watching people passing by

And enjoying the purely no-thinking moment, except music . . .

This was an unknown building on my way which reminded me of a similar one located in the similar position on the Huai Hai Road in Shanghai

Had sushi buffet for lunch in the nearby China Town, 40% off the regular price £7.8 during lunch time which was not bad (If I remember correctly, the name of the Japanese style restaurant was Wasabi)

A long tiring day ended after 16 hours

BTW1: It's the first time I've known that people from Macao change their passports in Portuguese Embassy which means their passports are still issued by Portugal not China :0

BTW2: I had got my passport with visa issued back by post after 3 working days which was pretty quick

heading for Bournemouth

Because there came a news saying that there were 1p sale tickets on a website

Because Bournemouth was one of the few places available for choice at that time

Because it's a place within UK and doesn't need visa for visiting

Because 10th Apr. was the only date available for booking

So, 6 return tickets from Glasgow to Bournemouth for tomorrow were bought

By that time, none of us even knew where it is

Only because it's SO SO SO CHEAP, JUST 2P PER RETURN TICKET!

Fortunately, it's said "seven miles of golden sands and seaside attractions have helped Bournemouth win the best beach in the UK award"

Unexpectedly, it's on the southernmost edge of England

What attracts me most is the Bournemouth Eye

Having got my supervisor's approval for one day leave

   Having checked in online

   Having booked Taxi

   Having shopped in TESCO

   Having cooked tea eggs

Bournemouth, we are ready to come!^_^

St. Andrews

Embarrassed

Left hugRight hug

September 01

HOPE for the BEST, PLAN for the WORST

Thinking

Me:PLAN for the WORST......HOPE for the BEST——

HOPE for the BEST, PLAN for the WORST

Wink

Disney on Ice in SECC

October 30

BBC Proms in the Park

BBC Proms
